ChatFrom

n8n

Updated

n8n connects apps into workflows. With the ChatFrom node, a workflow can ask one of your chatbots a question, add pages, texts and questions to what it knows, read the conversations visitors had with it, and check your credits. It also works as a tool for n8n's AI Agent.

What it can do

PartWhat it does
ChatbotAsk a chatbot a question and get its answer, with the sources it used. Get one chatbot, or all of them.
KnowledgeAdd web pages, a text, or a question with its exact answer. List a chatbot's sources, and remove one.
ConversationGet one conversation, message by message, or the newest ones from every channel, filtered to those handed to a person, rated down or left unanswered.
UsageThe credits used this month, the plan's allowance, and when it starts again.

Every action works on the chatbots in your own account, the same as the dashboard, and within your plan.

1. Install the node

  1. In n8n, open Settings, then Community nodes, and press Install.
  2. Enter n8n-nodes-chatfrom, confirm that you understand community nodes come from outside n8n, and press Install.
  3. Open any workflow, press + and search for ChatFrom.

Installing a community node takes the n8n instance's owner or an admin. The package is on npm, and its source is on GitHub, published from there with a signed provenance statement so anyone can check it was built from that code.

2. Connect your ChatFrom account

  1. In ChatFrom, open Account in the sidebar and find API keys for AI agents.
  2. Name the key after where it will be used, such as n8n, press Make a key and copy it. It starts with cf_ and is shown once.
  3. In n8n, open a ChatFrom step, choose Create new credential under Credential, paste the key into API Key and press Save. n8n checks the key at once and says when the connection works.

The key works as you, so the node sees your chatbots and nobody else's. A key of its own for n8n lets you stop it without stopping anything else.

3. Workflows to start from

Answer customer emails

A Gmail or Outlook trigger for each new email, then ChatFrom, Ask a chatbot, with the email's text as the Message, then a Gmail or Outlook step that saves the answer as a draft reply. The answer marks its sources as [1], [2]; leave them out with an expression, or add the sources under the reply.

Keep your chatbot up to date

An RSS Feed Trigger, or your site's webhook when a page is published, then ChatFrom, Add pages to a chatbot, with the page's address. A page added before is replaced by its newer version, and one that has not changed costs nothing. For a list of questions kept in Google Sheets, a Google Sheets trigger and Add a question and answer: the same question again replaces its answer.

A morning report

A Schedule Trigger every morning, then ChatFrom, Get many conversations, with the Handed Off, Rated Down or Unanswered filter and the days to look back, then Get the account usage, then a Slack message that says how many there were and the credits used. The conversations it lists are the ones worth reading, and often a page or a question to add.

An AI agent that knows your business

Add n8n's AI Agent, and under Tool add ChatFrom, Ask a chatbot. Let the model fill in the Message (the button beside the field), and the agent asks your chatbot whenever it needs something from your own pages and documents. Add Get many conversations or Get the account usage as more tools, and the agent can say how your chatbot is doing.

Good to know

  • Answers and adding knowledge use your monthly credits, the same as in the dashboard. Listing chatbots, sources and conversations, and reading usage, cost nothing.
  • Add pages takes up to 60 addresses in one step, each on its own line or after a comma, or a list from an expression. Each page added gives back its doc_id, which Remove a knowledge source takes. An entry that is not a web address comes back as not added, and a page behind a sign-in cannot be added, since ChatFrom reads it from the open web.
  • Get many conversations gives the newest 50, from the last 7 days unless Days says otherwise.
  • Each key can make 120 requests a minute. When ChatFrom asks to wait, the node waits and asks once more.

Keep your key safe

  • A key works as you, so treat it like a password. n8n keeps it in its credentials, encrypted; never put it in a workflow you share.
  • The Account page shows when each key was last used. Delete a key you no longer use, or one you think someone else has seen; it stops working at once.
  • Conversations hold what your visitors wrote, and answers draw on pages others wrote. When n8n's AI Agent reads them, the node tells it to read them as information, never as instructions; look at what the agent does with them before you let it act on its own.

The node's README lists every field. To work with your chatbots from Claude Code or Cursor instead, see AI agents and MCP.
